Democracy,Governance and Civil Society Services:

Our services are tailored to meet the needs of each client.
In the legislative area, these include design, implementation and/or assistance with:

  • legislative needs assessments;
  • comprehensive legislative projects;
  • institutional modernization plans;
  • targeting legislative study tours to build specific legislative capabilities;
  • legislative web sites and electronic systems;
  • public hearings and public information offices;
  • professional legislative staff services, such as: bill drafting, budget and oversight, and research staffs both inside and outside of national legislatures;
  • legislative orientation on media and press relations;
  • advising bilateral and multilateral organizations on conducting successful legislative assistance programs;
  • publishing manuals and guides on legislative strengthening; and
  • international conferences on legislative strengthening.

Other SUNY/CID democracy and governance related services include:

  • creating programs for citizen groups and the media for better relations with legislatures;
  • advising and assisting national governments on implementing decentralization programs;
  • training professional local government staff;
  • assisting in drafting and enacting legal reform legislation;
  • providing publications to assist citizen groups in overseeing local government spending;
  • assisting in developing systems of alternative dispute resolution;
  • publishing procedures manuals for local government staff;
  • conducting workshops on implementing decentralization programs;
  • assisting in drafting campaign finance reform regulations;
  • designing and conducting observational training visits for judicial and legislative members and their staff;
  • assisting legislatures in the reform of their statutes and Standing Orders;
  • helping legislatures to enact, and the courts, prosecutors and police to enforce, anti-corruption measures;
  • establishing and strengthening justice and legislative sector specific NGOs; and
  • designing and implementing sub-grant programs to support the democracy related activities of local and international NGOs.

Private Sector and Economic Development:

SUNY/CID also supports private enterprise in emerging markets with the following services:

  • establishing business training centers and training staff members of these centers to provide much needed services such as consulting and training on a wide-scale basis to local communities
  • establishing MBA programs at universities and colleges
  • assisting businesses in obtaining investment
  • providing micro-credit loans and leases to small businesses
  • training government officials on strategies to promote economic growth
  • publishing materials for entrepreneurs to utilize in strengthening their businesses
  • creating and making available valuable resources for business people via the internet
  • creating and operating business incubators to help start-up businesses succeed and
  • developing and conducting seminars, either in the U.S. or internationally, on virtually every aspect of doing business.

Environment, Health and Education:

SUNY/CID training services related to the areas of Environment, Health and Education include:

  • providing training in countries throughout the world (SUNY/CID has facilitated participant training and professional exchanges in over 50 countries)
  • developing area-specific training agendas targeted at impacting public policy
  • building capacity of NGOs
  • strengthening the accountability and transparency of NGOs
  • creating individualized programs in response to participant need
  • devising specialized courses in partner countries to address areas neglected by the traditional educational system
  • creating short intensive courses to meet the needs of working professionals
  • organizing U.S. - based study tours for all manner of training needs and
  • using the services of professionals from various countries to provide an international perspective and up-to date instruction in each venue.
